Joyce Trinh, exhibition coordinator, California Art Club San Diego, “Beyond the Border, en Plein Air” takes visitors on a visual journey starting from the public parks, regional and national parks, into neighborhoods, past historical sites of architectural marvel, along the bay, and the serene Pacific shoreline. The journey concludes with a tranquil finale at the dock, leaving a lasting impression of the journey’s diverse landscapes. This journey, much like the artistic process, is a transformative one where each step reveals new perspectives and insights. The exhibition offers a space where plein air artists share their unique interpretations of the world around them. Each painting is the artist’s experience, inviting viewers to pause and reflect. The time and consideration given by each artist enriches the public’s understanding of the artistic journey, making the exhibition a shared experience of discovery and appreciation. Thank you for highlighting the beauty of this artistic en plein air painting voyage.

The museum celebrates California Plein air painters every year. This year there is a focus on celebrating painters and Plein air clubs in Baja, California and throughout Southern California.
From the exhibition and community coordinator Joyce Trinh, CAC SD,
Beyond the Borders is an inclusive and free-to-artists exhibition.
It is a collaborative effort between the California Art Club San Diego Chapter, the
Salmagundi San Diego Chapter, San Diego Watercolor Society, Desert Plein Air
Association, San Diego Urban Sketchers, Oceanside Museum of Art, San Diego Plein
Air Painters Meet Up Group, Temecula Art Guilt, Fallbrook Art Guild, Coronado
and the Bonita Museum and Cultural Center. The purpose is to exhibit a one-month
free to enter and free admission exhibition with local plein air artists to be held in
the Bonita Museum and Cultural Center. This will offer many artists and residents of
SoCal area the opportunity to display their juried plein air paintings. This also will
afford school students, college classes, art associations and residents a chance to
view the plein air exhibit during this time and become familiar with the Bonita
Museum structure and programs.
The one-month event will be a first of its kind. It will encourage artists from different
organizations to collaborate and become familiar with each other’s
organizations. Plein aire artists are modern day historians as they will be
painting in unique historical locations. The suggested spots may include the Tule
Boat Launch by Kumeyaay Community, Stein Historical Farm, and the Mission San
Luis Rey. Another location will be the South Bay Wildlife Refuge in Chula Vista. A
kayak to South Bay is also desired for participating artists to experience. However,
artists may choose their locations to paint from January to May 2024.
We will collect both the records of participants and exhibit attendees. We will record
contributions from local organizations and art suppliers’ sponsorship for the event.
Our records will show community support for the arts. Docent tours will be available
for this exhibit for students, art associations, and the community and will be recorded.
This exhibition will include an invitation to the south of the border artists’
communities to participate and it will be publicized in their communities for entering
the exhibit and advertise free admission to attend. We aim to connect and collaborate with many artists groups in SoCal and Mexico.

About the Juror:
(Mr.) JEAN STERN
Director Emeritus
The Irvine Museum
A nationally recognized authority on California Impressionism, Mr. Stern has extensive experience as an author, curator, lecturer, and teacher. He was the founding and sole director of The Irvine Museum (1992-2016), a small but exceptionally active California institution that collected, researched and displayed paintings of the California Impressionist Style (1890-1940). The Irvine Museum Collection is now part of the Langson Museum at the University of California, Irvine.
The Irvine Museum was founded by Joan Irvine Smith (1933-2019) and her mother Athalie Richardson Irvine Clarke (1903-1993) in 1992, and with James Irvine Swinden as president. As director, Mr. Stern worked to establish a national presence for California Impressionism through a noteworthy series of books, exhibitions, lectures, articles and video documentaries. In his career, he has presented over 300 lectures and judged and juried more than 150 local, national and international art competitions. He has authored, edited or contributed to over 30 books on California art. He is credited with coining the term “California Impressionism” first used in his introductory essay to Plein Air Painters of California: The Southland, published in 1982 by Ruth Lilly Westphal, the first book on Southern California painting to gain national distribution.
Mr. Stern has presented tours and lectures on California Art in numerous museums including the International Cultural Center, Krakow, Poland; Mona Bismarck Foundation in Paris, France; El Centro Cultural del Conde Duque, Madrid, Spain; National Academy Museum in New York; Terra Museum in Chicago; San Diego Museum of Art; Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma; Gibbes Museum in Charleston; Brigham Young University Museum; Autry National Western Heritage Center; The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum and many others. He appears in IMPRESSIONS OF CALIFORNIA, a PBS documentary video series on art in California, and on PLEIN AIR: PAINTING THE AMERICAN LANDSCAPE, (PBS 2007).
He was a consultant to the Fleischer Museum in Scottsdale, Arizona, the first museum anywhere dedicated to California Impressionist art. He also is an adviser to the Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University, in Orange, California. He currently serves on the board of the California Art Club, founded in 1909, and is a board adviser to the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, in Laguna Beach, California. Since its inception in 2012, he has presented lectures at every annual Plein Air Convention, organized by B. Eric Rhoads and Plein Air Magazine.
In 2017, Mr. Stern received the prestigious CHEVALIER OF THE ORDER OF ARTS AND LETTERS from the French Ministry of Culture. In 2024, The Laguna Art Museum presented him with the Wendt Award, the highest honor it bestows. He has also been presented with three LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS: by the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association in 2013; by the Plein Air Painters of America in 2014; and by Plein Air Magazine in 2014. In 2011, he and his wife Linda Weingarten Stern were honored with the SAMUEL GENDEL COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD, presented by the American Jewish Committee of Orange County.
